Jaya files nomination in Krishnagiri

All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary J Jayalalitha filed her nomination papers on Monday for the Krishnagiri constituency of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. The election is to be held on May 10.

Dharmapuri district officials told the Press Trust of India that Jayalalitha filed her papers before the revenue divisional officer, Krishnagiri.

She will file her nomination for the Andipatti constituency on Tuesday.

The former chief minister, who was sentenced to two jail terms of two years and three years in two TANSI land deal cases by a special court last year, failed to get the conviction stayed by the Madras high court last week.

But while dismissing her petition, Justice Malai Subramaniam observed that she was not disqualified, as the sentences had been suspended by the high court at the time of admission of her appeals, which implied that the conviction had also been suspended.

The judge also observed that she could raise the issue before the Election Commission itself.

With Jayalalitha now filing her nomination, the ball is in the commission's court as the returning officer will have to decide whether to accept or reject the papers.
