EC has no comments on Jaya's eligibility

The Election Commission on Monday parried a question on whether AIADMK chief Jayalalitha would be able to contest the May 10 assembly polls in Tamil Nadu.

''No comments,'' said Chief Election Commissioner M S Gill when asked whether the full Commission, which met in the day, discussed the issue.

The AIADMK chief filed her nomination papers from Krishnagiri constituency and said she would be filing the papers for the Andipatti constituency on Tuesday.

Jayalalitha's October 9 conviction by a Special Judge in Madras and sentence of prison terms of two years and three years respectively, involving the purchase of lands belonging to the state-owned Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corporation, effectively bars her from contesting the poll under the Representation of Peoples Act.

Meanwhile, a three-member DMK MP delegation led by senior leader Viduthalai Virumbi called on the chief election commissioner and sought the commission's directions to allow independent candidates to contest the polls on the symbol of a recognised political party.

The delegation also complained about the alleged violation by Jaya TV of EC guidelines on poll coverage.
