We are renovating, not building
a new temple: VHP

In a quick rejoinder to Home Minister L K Advani's statement that there was no need for reconstruction of the Ram Temple at Ayodhya as a de jure temple already existed there, VHP on Wednesday said it was only working towards 'renovating' the shrine and not building a new one.

"We have always held that it (the disputed structure) has always been a temple. We are only engaged in renovating it and converting it into a grand temple," senior VHP leader Acharya Giriraj Kishore told reporters in New Delhi.

"Does it look proper that Ram lalla is worshipped in a makeshift temple?" he asked.

On Advani's statement that the demolition of the structure on December six, 1992 was 'unfortunate and painful' to him, Kishore said, "He is not saying it for the first time. But for us, it was a golden day as it was on that day that Hindus established their identity and proved that they were not cowards."

"The demolition had a three-pronged effect. It boosted the self-confidence of the Hindus, sent a message to fanatic Muslims that their writ cannot run and proved to the world that Hindus were not cowards," he said.

In his two-hour deposition before the Liberhan Commission on Wednesday, Advani had said, "I have been pleading with the supporters of Ram janam bhoomi, who occasionally announce that from this date onwards we will start reconstruction of the temple, and telling them that at the site there at Ram janam sthan, there is nothing but a temple."
