Life paralysed in Darjeeling hills

Life remained paralysed in three sub-divisions of Darjeeling district as the Gorkha National Liberation Front-sponsored indefinite bandh entered the third day on Wednesday.

The hills wore a deserted look with all shops and business establishments downing their shutters and vehicles keeping off the roads, District Magistrate Anil Verma said.

State and Central government offices also reported thin attendance.

The bandh has been called in protest against the recent attack on GNLF president Subhash Ghising.

GNLF's Darjeeling chief, Dipak Gurung, said: "If the culprits behind the attack are arrested and the sophisticated arms used in the operation seized, we are ready to withdraw the bandh."

Meanwhile, the secretary of the Terai branch of the Indian Tea Association, D N Gupta, has expressed concern about the bandh's effect on the tea industry.
