Union Home Minister L K Advani Tuesday said the kar sevaks had demolished the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya because they felt that the leaders of the Ayodhya movement would not be able to build the Ram temple through the due process of law.
"Maybe the kar sevaks felt that the leaders of the Ram temple movement failed to build the temple by due process of law and in their impatience took a wrongful course," Advani stated before the Liberhan Commission probing the demolition.
Referring to the acquisition of land for the construction of the temple, he pointed out that the kar sevaks' anger could have been diverted if the land had been acquired. However, this was not done because of the P V Narasimha Rao government, he said.
Advani also agreed with Prime Minister A B Vajpayee's views expressed in his musings recently that the wrongs of a medieval past cannot be righted in modern times by a similar wrong.
He also did not agree with earlier news-reports which had depicted Advani as rejoicing following the demolition. "I do regard the demolition as unfortunate and painful," the home minister told the commission.
