50 bodies surface from Sutlej river

Fifty highly decomposed bodies, including that of five women and two children, have come to the surface of Sutlej river in various villages in Ferozepur district in Punjab, official sources said in Ferozepur on Monday.

Senior civil and police officials rushed to the villages, including Kunde, Habibwal and Khundarghati, after 38 bodies were found and cremated en masse by a local social organisation Ferozepur Welfare Club on Sunday, the sources said.

Twelve more bodies were found on Monday and district authorities deployed police personnel along the river and issued directions to social and voluntary organisations not to cremate any body.

The civil surgeon of Ferozepur has been directed to constitute a board for conducting post mortem of the bodies.

Police said the bodies were highly decomposed making identification impossible.

The sources said some gunny bags, which were probably tied to the bodies to submerge them in the river, were also found.

The bodies surfaced after the water level receded between one feet and five feet from the normal of around 12 feet as water discharge was stopped to conduct some repairs.
