Three tribals killed in police firing in MP

Three tribals were killed when police opened fired to disperse a mob during an operation to nab illegal woodcutters at Mehndikheda village near Dewas in Madhya Pradesh, police said on Tuesday.

Police opened fire when a group of tribals attacked with bows and arrows a joint team of forest, revenue and police officials, resulting in the death of three tribals, Additional Suprintendent of Police R K Shivhare informed.

Three policemen, two forest protection committee members and a civilian were also injured in the incident, he added.

Two of the bodies were brought to the Indore Press Club by the tribals.

Speaking to reporters, a tribal who identified himself as Jherma, alleged the three were killed when police opened fire at tribals who were protesting the demolition of hutments by the Dewas district administration.

The state government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

Senior Dewas district administration officers, including Collector Ashok Varnwal and Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Shami, were camping at Bagli.
