His grit, ability to keep himself composed and sheer presence of mind, were factors that won Calcutta-based businessman Ramesh Chandra Dubey a whopping Rs 5 million on the Kaun Banega Crorepati show a month ago.

However, the windfall seem to have earned his family and well-wishers more than their share of worries and mental agony.

Ever since he returned to Calcutta after winning the highest sum by a participant till date on the show, rumours have been rife that the underworld has been after him for extortion, causing enormous tension to his family.

On Wednesday night, in fact, rumours spread in Bombay that Dubey had been shot at in Calcutta. However, when this correspondent contacted Dubey at his AJC Bose Road residence around midnight, Dubey was in bed!

Told about the rumours that were doing the rounds in Bombay and elsewhere, Dubey said he was not surprised.

"Everyday somebody or the other from my family calls me up to inquire whether I am being targeted by extortionists in Calcutta. The other day, my sister Seema called from Bokaro wanting to know whether there was any element of truth in the rumour that my daughter Neha had been kidnapped. Only last week, some of my friends in Barabazar area asked me how much I paid off to extortionists," Dubey informed.

Dubey's father too appeared perturbed over the way such rumours have been giving his relatives outside Bengal sleepless nights.
