Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee will undergo knee replacement surgery on his left knee on his return to India.
Briefing the media on Tuesday, the prime minister's press advisor H K Dua said Dr Chittranjan S Ranawat had examined Vajpayee on Monday evening, and advised knee replacement surgery.
The prime minister has accepted Dr Ranawat's advice, Dua said.
The surgery will take place after the prime minister returns home on September 19. Vajpayee will decide on an appropriate date.
Dr Ranawat has agreed to perform the operation in India. Director, orthopaedic surgery, Centre for Total Joints Replacement, Lennox Hill Hospital, New York, he is considered one of the world's foremost experts in the area of knee joint replacement surgery.
Dr Ranawat did not conduct any detailed tests on the prime minister's knee on Monday, but studied the reports of Vajpayee's personal physician. The reports were sent to Dr Ranawat from India earlier, before the prime minister's arrival in New York.
