'10 days should have been adequate to diagnose Kumaramangalam's problem'

Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000, 03:50:00EST -0700
Subject: Kumaramangalam

I have been trying hard to get this message across to the people involved with the treatment of Mr Kumarmangalam. In 1998, a friend of mine was treated with exactly identical symptoms by Dr Lalitha in Apollo Hospitals. Unfortunately, the treatment was not successful but the doctor managed to get information about the ailment they are dealing with. So the medical team at AIIMS should team up with Dr Lalitha to carry out his treatment.

Ten days should have been adequate to diagnose Kumaramangalam's problem. When greed exceeds treatment of patient as a priority, such goof-ups in diagnosis become common.

The hospital authorities may contest all that has been said in the press and in parliament. After all, in this country nobody admits to their fault nor do they do anything to correct the mistake. Apollo Hospital's sources may deny whatever was alleged to have been done, but it cannot deny the hard fact that even after having kept a minister under observation for more than a week, they could not make the right diagnosis, so much so that the patient asked to be discharged so that he could get admitted to another hospital.

If this can happen to someone like Mr Kumaramangalam who is not only a leading citizen of the country, but also a central minister commanding a lot of influence, what is the fate of so many poor people in the country who go such hospitals borrowing money hoping for good treatment?

A thorough inquiry should be held and the hospital should be sued for damages, a change of management and also closure possibly, should be considered if the enquiry reveals either complacency or incompetency in treating patients.

Subject: Tiruchi prays for Kumaramangalam

This report should be given as a printout to every Member of Parliament and of the Legislative Assembly throughout the country. If you are sincere and honest, no power on the earth can separate you from the people.

In my honest opinion I don't know to how many politicians people would have prayed for the way they did for Kumaramangalam.

This rejoinder is a clear admission that the hospital treated Kumaramangalam on the basis of trial and error and that they could not really diagnose his ailment. They confirm that there was not much irregularity in the blood test except the fact that the ESR was high. That his leukocyte count was very low could not be traced by them. They should be sued before the National Consumer Redressal Commission by the speaker of Parliament unless they seek public apology for their lapse.

I agree with the hospital authorities that no negligence was involved in the treatment of Kumaramangalam. It is a matter of diagnosis and medical judgement of the attending doctors which matters at a given point of time. Dr Rao is a known and experienced doctor and no one should have any doubts about his competency. At least these discredited politicians have no right to comment on the work of an experienced doctor, not Madan Lal Khurana at least. Mr. Khurana, it seems, is settling scores with Dr Reddy when BJP government in Delhi had drawn swords on the matter of free treatment on the dictates of the state government. His outbursts are political in nature and maliciously made.

That was a good report.

You have given only one side of the whole issue. You should contact some of the patients treated by Apollo and find out their views. You must give more publicity to such five-star hospitals and put pressure on them to reduce the high fees they charge from the poor Indians. We cannot compare the rates here with that in USA.

Subject: Apollo had done everything possible for Ranga

I personally have never been to any of the Apollo Hospitals but going through the interview and the recent happenings, I feel that Apollo has been pestered by the media. The media should verify facts before publishing anything.

One more important issue raised by Dr Reddy is that of health insurance. The media can do a great service if it can initiate a debate throughout the country on this issue.

I have personal experience with Apollo Hospital, Chennai. My father-in-law underwent a by-pass surgery there. The surgeon who attended on him was a famous doctor. Yes, the hospital is well equipped alright but, there is no concern for the patient shown by any of the doctors there. The surgeon who treated my father-in-law would barely spend a minute with him. The assistant doctors walk around chewing bubble gums while visiting patients after surgery and show no patience or interest in their questions or concerns.

When a patient is paying two and three lakh as hospital charges, cannot the surgeons and doctors in attendance spend sufficient time with the patient and allay his fears? Dr Reddy keeps talking about the facilities at Apollo. I don't think anybody is questioning the facilities there. People are complaining about the lack of concern shown by doctors towards their patients.

It is so unfortunate that the media, especially television, have unfairly portrayed Apollo Hospital. I think Apollo Hospitals in general have world class facilities. The doctors and medical staff there are wonderful people doing a terrific job.
