Chargesheets against 16 Orissa govt officials

M I Khan in Bhubaneswar

The Vigilance Department in Orissa has filed chargesheets against 16 government officials for misappropriation of funds, accumulation of assets disproportionate to their known sources of income and acceptance of illegal gratification.

The action, which has sent tremors down the state bureaucracy, seems to be the Biju Janata Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party government's warning to officials to watch their conduct in the public.

According to sources in the Vigilance Department those chargesheeted include two assistant sub inspectors of police, an executive engineer, an assistant executive engineer, a junior engineer, a statistical assistant and two revenue inspectors.

Two assistant sub-inspectors of Bolangir and Kalahandi districts have been chargesheeted for acceptance of illegal gratification, while the executive engineer and the assistant executive engineer have been accused of accumulation disproportionate assets.

Sources said Junior Engineer Sushant Kumar Patel has been charged for passing a bill for construction of a house under Indira Awas Yojna in favour of his son.
