'There is more to this kidnapping than meets the eye'

Date: Thu, 19 Oct 2000, 10:20:12EST +1000
Subject: The women whom Veerappan widowed

That was a moving feature. Why don't we use the Internet as a medium to mobilise public opinion against the weak and submissive attitude of the government towards Veerappan? I am sure the effort will succeed and bring up many such sordid stories of the government's indifference to the welfare of the common man and instead, its dedicated efforts to support and promote crime and to bend to any extent to protect criminals.

A good feature. It helps people to look beyond celebrities and big shots. We have erred in the past by bowing down to the wishes of terrorists and this is a mistake we should never repeat.

I sympathise with all these people, especially for Mrs Nagavaeni, the widow of the late police constable Mr Elangovan. I would like to contribute something towards her son's treatment. The state government's apathy towards the families of those who laid down their lives trying to nab Veerappan is appalling.

I feel that these two states have more to lose if they capture Veerappan. He is a mouse demonised by the local population. Unfortunately, India as a society where indiscipline is the norm and where hero worship of anti-socials is very much accepted.

I feel so sorry for the state of affairs in Karnataka arising out of this kidnapping. If I could be of any help to these victims, please do let me know.

The governments of Tamil nadu and Karnataka have been fooling the people of their states and of the nation all this while. There has been no concrete effort made so far to nab Veerappan. And why is Dr Rajkumar's family not permitting commando operation to catch the criminal? In any case, what has been this family's contribution to the nation that they deserve so much interest and attention? All they have done is to dance and sing and act for the public.

There is more to this kidnapping than meets the eye. The negotiators are all Tamilians, the governments of the two states have not been able to give appropriate replies to the Supreme Court's queries regarding the failure of successive governments to nab Veerappan. It is surprising that the press is not doing much to unfold the real drama taking place behind the scene. What has happened to all the so-called investigative journalists?

It was very distressing to read the article. Would we be taking the correct step if we released the prisoners in exchange for the hostages and thereby, in a large sense, wiping out the sacrifice made by the people mentioned in the article? In my opinion, that would be ridiculous and totally unfair. One proven approach would be to make it a law of the land to refuse to negotiate with terrorists and criminals -- thereby wiping out the inclination (and pressure) to negotiate at times such as this.

A touching article. Bowing to the demands of Veerappan would only expose the terrible inefficiency and incapability of the government. What trust and faith can be placed in a government that is not capable of protecting its people from a forest brigand? How can such a government cope with cross border terrorism and other such international issues?

Peace does not come easily. If we don't mind sacrificing the lives of our policemen to nab criminals and ensue peace, why should we hesitate to sacrifice the life of Dr Rajkumar?

What the hell is our government doing? This is indeed a sorry state of affairs.
