Sardinha submits resignation to governor

Sandesh Prabhudesai in Panaji

Goa Chief minister Francisco Sardinha Tuesday afternoon submitted his resignation to Governor Mohammed Fazal ahead of a trust vote, paving the way for the Bharatiya Janata Party to take over the reigns of the tourist state.

The new government, headed by senior BJP leader Manohar Parrikar, is expected to be sworn at 5.30 pm.

Gopinath Munde, the BJP vice president, is arriving in Panaji to oversee the swearing in.

Sardinha told journalists before leaving for Raj Bhavan that there was no point in facing the trust vote as situation had changed drastically since Monday evening.

Following the decision of the Congress to abstain from the vote of confidence, four of Sardinha's ministerial colleagues split from his Goan People's Congress and formed a separate group.

The BJP now enjoys the support of 26 legislators, including four from the GPC, two from the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, one from the Congress (Shaikh Hassan) and one independent. BJP's own strength in the House of 40 has also gone up to 18.

Parrikar has said that he would pick his cabinet from the 21 MLAs he had met the governor with while staking the claim to form the government.
