CBI registers fresh case against 3 JMM leaders

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday registered a fresh case under section 13 (1) (e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act against three Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leaders.

The case was registered against former members of Parliament Suraj Mandal, S Marandi and Shibu Soren on the directions of additional and sessions judge Ajit Bharihoke who delivered the judgment in the JMM bribery case on October 12.

While passing the sentence against former prime minister Narasimha Rao and former home minister Buta Singh, the judge had directed the CBI to register cases against the three JMM leaders for possessing wealth and property beyond their known sources of income. The judge also ordered the agency to seize the money (Rs 16.4 million) received by the three leaders for voting in favour of the Rao government.

Earlier, the apex court, while handing down a judgment in the JMM case, had held that those who received bribes for voting in favour of the Rao government could not be held accountable but had asked the bribe givers to stand trial.

The new case was registered by G N Gupta, deputy superintendent in the anti corruption branch of the CBI, a day after the judgment was delivered by special CBI judge Ajit Bharihoke in the Vigyan Bhavan annexe.

According to a CBI source, the agency is also thinking of appealing against the acquittal of some of the accused for lack of sufficient evidence. CBI is also preparing to file counter affidavits soon after Rao and Buta Singh move the Delhi high court against the judgment.
