Bombay's civic staff on indefinite strike

Over 100,000 employees of the Bombay Municipal Corporation went on an indefinite strike from Thursday morning on the issue of ex-gratia payment and other demands, after talks with Bombay Mayor Hareshwar Patil failed.

Sharad Rao, president of the Municipal Mazdoor Union, asserted that the union called for the strike immediately after the talks failed. The meeting with the mayor went on till 2345 hours IST.

Employees of the drainage, building proposal, health, engineering and other departments will join the strike and workers at cemeteries will also join in, he said.

Municipal Commissioner V Ranganathan had earlier stated that the BMC's financial position was precarious, but suggested that the union give its formula.

The administration has geared up to deal with the strike and decided to take action against employees attempting to cripple civic services.
