PM briefed about Bengal flood situation

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was briefed by senior officials of the Prime Minister's Office on the worsening flood situation in West Bengal.

"The flood situation in West Bengal is causing concern," a senior PMO official said in Bombay. The prime minister was briefed about the natural calamity on Thursday morning. Principal Secretary Ashok Tandon reviewed the flood situation.

PMO officials have asked the Indian Petrochemical Corporation Ltd., to divert a part of their production of polythene to the flood-affected areas of West Bengal.

The PMO has also allowed the state government to take food grains on credit for the flood affected areas. Normally, state governments have to send a requisition to the Food Corporation of India and pay in advance.

However, taking into consideration the flood situation, the FCI can release food grains without advance payment from the state government.
