Rajan not allowed to leave Thailand

Thai immigration police on Thursday turned down a request from Chhota Rajan to leave the country and declared his passport invalid, the Bangkok Post reported on Friday.

A source at the immigration police bureau told the paper that the Indian embassy contacted the immigration office, stating that some details in the Indian mafia boss' passport were incorrect, and advised the bureau to nullify it.

The police, therefore, did as advised and decided to continue to detain Rajan who was sent back for treatment to the Samitivej hospital, the paper reported.

The immigration police had earlier said if, by 0900 hours Thursday, they were not contacted by the Indian Embassy for his extradition, Rajan would be freed.

The paper also reported that Sirichai Piyapichetkul, Rajan's lawyer, withdrew from the case on learning of the immigration police's decision. He alleged that Thai police were using all sorts of tricks to delay Rajan's departure despite the fact that his client was a victim of an attack by a team of gunmen sent by a rival Bombay-based mafia gang.

On Tuesday, Rajan appeared before the South Bangkok Criminal Court where he pleaded guilty to a visa offence and was fined 500 baht.

Pol Lt-Gen Hemaraj Thareethai told the paper that his office had written three letters to the Indian government asking them whether they wish to request Rajan's extradition.

Thai police have apparently been reluctant to free him. Rajan is wanted by the Indian police for his alleged involvement in numerous criminal cases in Bombay.

On September 15, Rajan was seriously injured in an attack on him by a group of gunmen.
