Dehradun being spruced up for Nov 1

With the Centre having decided upon Dehradun as the temporary capital of Uttaranchal, preparations have begun on a large scale to make it functional by November one.

All buildings which are to be used as government offices are being renovated and repaired. All government buildings in Dehradun will be taken over by the new government, which will begin working in November when the new hill state will come into existence.

Till now, there was speculation whether Doon (as Dehradun is referred to) or Nainital would be made the temporary capital.

The Centre has left it to the government of Uttaranchal to decide upon the permanent capital of the state later.

Some buildings had already been repaired in anticipation of Dehradun becoming the capital.

Some of the most beautiful buildings in Doon house autonomous institutions like the Wildlife Institute of India and Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology. Most of these are premier national research institutions and residents are hoping that the new government would let them continue where they are.

Residential accommodation for ministers and principal secretaries is also being searched for.

The logo of the new state would be decided upon on October 11 at a high-level meeting in Lucknow.

Meanwhile, the serene Doon valley is preparing itself to be taken over by the hectic activity associated with a state capital.
