Alexander calls Putin visit a milestone

Maharashtra Governor Dr P C Alexander and his wife Ackama received visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin and his wife Lyudmilla Putina, along with his ministerial team and other high ranking officials at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday evening.

Extending a warm welcome to the visiting president, the governor told him that Maharashtra was the third largest, but the most advanced state in industry and business, with several major business houses having corporate offices in Bombay.

The governor said that the visit was an important milestone in bilateral relations between the two countries.

The governor said Russia had a special connection with Bombay. In 1466, Russian traveller Afnasi Nikitin had visited Alibaug near Bombay, which was three decades earlier to the visit of Vasco Da Gama to Kerala. The governor also mentioned that the Russian consulate in Bombay had completed 100 years.

Terming Putin's address to the joint session of Parliament as remarkable and heart-warming, Alexander said that the address by the president has been warmly received all over the country.

The declaration of strategic partnership signed between the two countries has given de fure status to the de facto partnership between the two countries, he said.

The governor later hosted a dinner in the honour of the visiting dignitaries which was attended by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, flag officer commanding-in-chief, western naval command Admiral Madhavendra Singh and captains of industry, trade and other distinguished invitees.
