Bombay police team's trip to Bangkok cancelled

The four-member Bombay police team, scheduled to leave for Bangkok on Sunday morning in connection with the abortive attempt on the life of underworld don Chhota Rajan there on September 15, has cancelled its trip following a directive from foreign ministry, highly placed sources in Maharashtra government's home department said in Bombay on Sunday.

"Foreign ministry officials on Saturday night asked the team not to go ahead with the trip,' the sources informed.

Though no reason was cited for cancelling the trip, to be headed by an official of the rank of assistant commissioner of police, the foreign ministry said it needed further clearance from Thai authorities in this regard, sources added.

However, necessary permissions of Interpol and Thai government were obtained earlier after the state government pushed for the extradition of Rajan, who is on the wanted list of the Bombay police for his alleged involvement in numerous criminal cases in Bombay, sources claimed.

Meanwhile, a report from Bangkok says the underworld don, who had earlier expressed his desire to return to India, is to petition the Thai prime minister's office on Monday against being forced to go back to that country.

Rajan was shot at and seriously injured in a Bangkok apartment on September 15 by a group of eight gunmen owing allegiance to a rival gang led by Chhota Shakeel. His associate, Michael D'Souza alias Rohit Verma, was killed and Verma's wife Sangeeta Sharma injured in the attack.
