Marwah takes over as Mizo governor: PTI

President K R Narayanan Wednesday appointed Ved Prakash Marwah as Governor of Mizoram after A Padmanaban resigned on health grounds.

Padmanaban's resignation was accepted by the President, the secretary to the governor, L R Laskar, said.

Laskar said Padmanaban resigned as Mizoram's climate did not suit him.

He, however, claimed ignorance about when the governor submitted his resignation.

Padmanaban, former chief secretary of Tamil Nadu, was appointed Mizoram Governor in 1998 when the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government at the Centre was supported by J Jayalalitha's AIADMK.

Sources at the Raj Bhavan said that Marwah, a former Indian Police Service officer, who had served in Mizoram as inspector general of police in 1978-79, would be sworn in as soon as arrangements are made.

He had served as Mizoram Governor for about five days when Padmanaban was on a long leave this year. Marwah is also Governor of Manipur.
