BJP condemns misuse of
Hindu deities' images: PTI

The Bharatiya Janata Party Saturday condemned the action of an American company, which decorated toilet seats with "images of Hindu deities".

"It is a disquieting news. A Seattle-based US company is marketing toilet seats under its series - Sacred Seat Collection - with images of Hindu gods Ganesh and Kali. A contemptible thing to be strongly condemned by all," party vice president Pyarelal Khandelwal said in a statement in New Delhi.

He said the ink of the resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly acknowledging the equality of all religions has not yet dried. "And here we see a group of people deliberately denigrating Hindu gods, knowing that they are held sacred by Hindus all over the world," he said.

Senior party leader J P Mathur said there appears to be a conspiracy by certain sections of a religious group to attack the Hindu community.

He said what has been done "is not in good taste and it is an insult to our religion and religious sentiments".

Various other Hindu organisations also expressed outrage over the depiction of Hindu deities on the toilet seats.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad claimed that the company had withdrawn its advertisements for the product following protests.

"It (the portrayal of Gods on toilet seats) has hurt Hindu feelings," RSS spokesman M G Vaidya told PTI.

Shiv Sena northern region chief Jai Bhagwan Goyal asked the Seattle-based company which is marketing the seats to withdraw its products from the market.

He also threatened to stage demonstrations at the American Embassy in New Delhi in protest against this "attempt to denigrate and humiliate Hindus".

"We will not allow anyone to insult our Gods," he said.

VHP senior vice-president Giriraj Kishore claimed that the company has withdrawn its advertisements for the product following protests from the American branch of the Sangh Parivar outfit.

"We are insisting on an unconditional apology from them, failing which we will launch an agitation and sue the American firm," Kishore told PTI.
