Krishna appeals for calm in Bangalore

Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna announced in the state assembly on Wednesday that Kannada film star Rajakumar, who was released in the morning by his captor Veerappan, was in good health, though tired from his 109-day ordeal in the jungles as a hostage.

"This incident should have not happened in the first place and we should take a lesson from it," Krishna told the House.

"I appeal to the people of Karnataka to show restraint as they have done for the last 109 days ever since Dr Rajakumar was kidnapped. We have managed to maintain peace among people speaking different languages in the state. And we should continue to do so," the chief minister said.

The state government has asked the Bangalore police to take additional precautions and clamp prohibitory orders under section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in sensitive areas of the capital.

Krishna said Rajakumar would be back in Bangalore latest by Thursday morning. Rajakumar's wife Parvathamma and sons Shivarajakumar, Raghavendra and Puneet have already left for Erode with Dr S A Govindraj, Rajakumar's son-in-law who was released by Veerappan last month.

In his statement, Krishna also thanked the Opposition in the state assembly for its co-operation in the resolution of the crisis.

Meanwhile, Dr B Ramana Rao, Rajakumar's family physician, said five doctors were attending on the actor at the guesthouse where he is currently lodged in Erode.

It is also learnt that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi invited Rajakumar to Madras on his release, but the actor said he wanted to go to Bangalore first and promised to visit Madras later.
