CBI raids Dalmiya in telecast case

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday raided the residence and offices of former International Cricket Council president Jagmohan Dalmiya and officials of Doordarshan and some private television channels in the telecast rights case.

Among the others raided were WorldTel boss Mark Mascarenhas and Stratcon chief Siddharth Ray.

The simultaneous raids began early Monday morning and are likely to continue well into the night.

CBI sources said the raids were conducted following the registration of a First Information Report against Dalmiya and some other persons involved in the TV rights case.

PTI adds: Sleuths of the agency's anti-corruption unit launched simultaneous raids in Delhi, Bangalore, Calcutta and other places, CBI sources said.

The agency had earlier said its anti-corruption unit was examining some documents relating to the alleged fraud. Its legal cell gave the final go-ahead, the sources said.

According to the sources, the CBI has alleged that Doordarshan sold television rights for two cricket World Cup tournaments to private firms despite having all the facilities to do the work itself.

They said several Doordarshan files pertaining to telecast rights of the 1996 and 1999 World Cups had been scrutinised by the agency and the anti-corruption unit felt a case could be registered and a formal inquiry initiated.

While the 1996 World Cup was jointly hosted by India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the 1999 World Cup was hosted by England.
