Soren formally seeks Congress support

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (Soren) president Shibu Soren on Wednesday formally sought the support of the Congress in his endeavour to form the government in Jharkhand, which comes into existence on November 15, and expressed confidence that he would be its first chief minister.

Soren called on Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee president Chandan Bagchi at his residence in Patna on Wednesday morning to request support to form a non-National Democratic Alliance government in Jharkhand.

Emerging from the meeting, which lasted for about an hour, Bagchi, told newspersons that the talks were 'cordial' and 'positive' and said he had apprised the party high command of the request.

Stating that the Congress was for installation of a secular non-NDA government in the new state, Bagchi said, "I think the central party leadership will take a final decision by late Wednesday evening or Thursday."

Shibu Soren said he was confident of Congress support and maintained that some legislators of the non-NDA parties would also back him.

Exuding confidence, Soren said, ''I will take oath as chief minister on November 15.
