BJP MLAs in Uttaranchal to
elect leader on Wednesday

A crucial meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party legislators in Uttaranchal will be held on Wednesday to elect their leader amid speculation that Nityanand Swamy may become the first chief minister of the hill state.

"The meeting will begin at 3 pm on Wednesday," BJP sources said, adding, however, that they were awaiting party high command's word on who would be the chief minister.

They said Swamy, chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, had emerged as the front-runner to head the new state slated to come into being on November 9.

Others in contention for the top post are BJP's chief whip in the Lok Sabha, Bhuvan Chand Khanduri, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman K C Pant and Bhagat Singh Keshyari, sources said.
