Naidu to induct former minister's
widow into cabinet on Monday

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is inducting Uma Madhava Reddy, widow of former panchayat raj minister A Madhava Reddy, into the cabinet on Monday.

She will be sworn in by Governor Dr C Rangarajan at a simple ceremony at the Raj Bhavan at 0930 hours IST, official sources said. She will fill the vacancy in the cabinet caused by her husband's killing by Naxalites eight months ago.

Alimineti Uma Devi Reddy was elected to the assembly in a bypoll from Bhongir constituency in Nalgonda district on May 29 this year. Riding on the "sympathy wave" for her husband, she scored an impressive victory in her maiden election by defeating her nearest Congress rival Chintala Venkateswara Reddy by a majority of 46,488 votes.

The bypoll was caused by the death of the then sitting legislator and panchayat raj minister A Madhava Reddy in a landmine blast triggered by the outlawed People's War Group of Naxalites near Ghatkesar on March 7 this year.

Madhava Reddy, who earlier held the home portfolio in the Chandrababu Naidu cabinet, had earned the wrath of Naxalites due to the killings of their comrades in encounters with police.

A housewife, Uma joined politics after her husband's death. She began her career with the Telugu Desam Party.
