Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Two persons were killed and 10 others were injured in a huge explosion near the main entrance of the tourist reception centre in the high-security Civil Lines area of Jammu & Kashmir's capital Srinagar.

Police said several cars at the tourist taxi stand were damaged in the explosion that shook the entire area this evening. The windowpanes of the tourist centre and an adjoining mosque were smashed.

Police said a militant who was carrying the high-intensity explosive device was possibly killed in the blast. One of the dead was identified as Bilal Ahmad Gilkar. The injured were shifted to hospital.

The area is heavily guarded by paramilitary personnel and the state police. The bomb exploded just five metres away from the police station adjacent to the heavily guarded tourist centre building where top state and central government officials are staying.

The bomb explosion has caused panic among tourists who have once again begun visiting the valley in the past few days. The area was tense. Anxious relatives of the employees and taxi drivers rushed to the spot as the news spread.
