DMK MPs flay govt over Lanka

E-Mail this report to a friend

Dravida Munnetra Kazagham members in the Rajya Sabha today criticised the government for keeping them in the dark about the fast-changing security situation in Sri Lanka and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's discussion with that country's Foreign Minister Laxman Kadirgamar last evening.

Raising the issue during zero hour, S V Virumbi (DMK) said it was sad that the government did not brief two ministers of the party on the grim situation in Sri Lanka, where more than 30,000 soldiers were trapped in Jaffna peninsula.

External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh admitted that he was certainly at fault for not holding talks with Commerce Minister Murasoli Maran on the issue.

The minister said it was not possible for him to hold talks with every one because of the fast-changing situation in the island nation.

He said the discussion on Sri Lanka could take place only yesterday as the leaders were busy in connection with the visit of a high-ranking dignitary (Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov).
