Muslim writer to convert to Hinduism

E-Mail this report to a friend

Muslim writer Palakkode K Hassan, who completed the course darz to be eligible to become a maulvi, is planning to embrace Hinduism on March 30 along with six others from the community.

Thirty-year-old Hassan, a regular contributor to religious periodicals in Kerala, has already adopted a new name, Kamal Hassan, evoking memories of another high-profile conversion in recent times -- that of the celebrated writer Kamala Das.

Hassan said in Thiruvananthapuram that it was not a spur of the moment decision and that he had been thinking of embracing Hinduism for the past two years.

He said the ceremony could not be held at his home village due to a "threat to his life."

Shiv Sena state president Bhuvanachandran said several Hindu priests would be present at the ceremony on March 30 in which Hassan, along with six other Muslims and two Christians would embrace Hinduism.

Hassan belongs to Palakkod village in Palakkad district. He completed a five year course darz, but did not work as a maulvi. He has been writing several articles in religious periodicals.
