Militants attacked a heavily guarded army camp at Badampora in Ganderbal early on Sunday morning, killing five soldiers. Seven soldiers were injured in the attack. Police sources said the militants sneaked inside the 5 Rashtriya Rifles camp and fired indiscriminately.

Soldiers from adjoining camps rushed to the spot to confront the militants. The exchange of fire continued for nearly an hour, but the militants escaped. All adjoining villages were cordoned off by the troops for search operations. Several people have been detained for questioning.

Militants late on Saturday evening also opened fire on the homes of Kashmiri Pandits at Peth Dialgam village in Anantnag district in south Kashmir, killing one woman and injuring T N Raina, who has been shifted to a hospital in Srinagar. This is the second attack on Kashmiri Pandits in the last 24 hours.

On Saturday militants entered the home of a Pandit at Achabal in south Kashmir, killing one person.

Authorities said more policemen have been rushed to the area. Last month three Pandits were killed at Telwani in south Kashmir, which resulted in the migration of the remaining villagers from the area.
