Maharashtra Congress president Pratap Bhosale quits

E-Mail this report to a friend

In a sudden move, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Pratap Bhosale today resigned from his post on "personal grounds".

Announcing his decision at a hurriedly called press conference at Gandhi Bhavan, the state Congress headquarters in south Bombay, Bhosale said he had forwarded his letter to All-India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi in the morning.

Bhosale said, "I was planning to quit soon after the assembly elections. But my decision got delayed for some reason or the other. But now I have finally decided to resign."

He hoped his resignation would be accepted.

He denied that he was quitting under pressure and said he had not spoken to anyone "except my son" about his decision.

Bhosale also said the Congress and the Democratic Front government, of which the Congress is the main constituent, are functioning in tandem and there are no differences between them.
