Lok Sabha adjourned till 1400 hrs over RSS issue

E-Mail this report to a friend

The impasse in Parliament over the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh issue continued today, with a determined Opposition forcing the Lok Sabha's adjournment till 1400 hrs IST, insisting that the issue be discussed under Rule 184 of the Rules of Procedure.

The members were on their feet as soon as Speaker G M C Balayogi entered the house, insisting that he should change his ruling permitting discussion under Rule 193 which does not provide for voting.

On Balayogi's appeal the Opposition members stopped for a while to greet the visiting Russian parliamentary delegation. They were on their feet again, raising a din and engaging in verbal clashes with members from the treasury benches.

Balayogi appealed to the members not to disrupt the question hour as several questions had been listed, but his appeal went unheard. Failing to control the members, the Speaker adjourned the house barely five minutes after it had assembled.

Congress member Madhavrao Scindia, Marxist member Basudev Acharya and Raghuvansh Prasad Singh (RJD) had sought to raise the issue, and members of the treasury benches were heard saying that the House was being held to ransom and that the Speaker should suspend the Opposition members.
