All 21 Indian peacekeepers freed

The Revolutionary United Front rebels in Sierra Leone have freed the 21 Indian peacekeepers who were being held hostage in Pendembu, near the Liberian border, for almost two months.

Liberian President Charles Taylor, who was believed to have interceded with the rebels, said in a statement that the released soldiers, part of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone, were in his country safe and sound.

But another 250 UN personnel, mainly Indian soldiers, are still surrounded and prevented from moving freely by RUF rebels in Kailahun.

The released peacekeepers were headed for Liberia's capital Monrovia, from where they will be flown back to UNAMSIL's headquarters in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
