E-Mail this report to a friend

The Election Commission has derecognised six political parties, including the Haryana Vikas Party and former prime minister Chandrashekhar's Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya) as regional parties with their legislative presence slipping after recent elections.

Official sources said in New Delhi that the other parties derecognised by the commission after hearings spread over a fortnight were the NTR Telegu Desam (Lakshmi Parvathi group), Rashtriya Janata Dal in Manipur, Samata Party in Haryana and Shiv Sena in Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

Notices have also been sent to the Communist Party of India-Marxists and the Janata Party prior to their derecognition. The hearing has been completed in the case of the Lok Shakti and the verdict reserved, they added.

With their derecognition, the parties stand to lose benefits like a reserved symbol and time over All India Radio and Doordarshan during elections.
