Ayodhya commission summons Kalyan Singh

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Liberhans Commission, probing the sequence of events leading to demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, today issued fresh summons to former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh asking him to appear before it on July 20.

"The commission cannot proceed without examining him as he was a key figure," Justice Liberhans said in his order after Singh failed to appear before the commission today.

Singh, in an application moved by his counsel B B Saxena, said that he did not want to appear before the commission as a writ petition challenging the inquiry was pending before the Allahabad high court.

The commission also said that the date for the examination of Union Home Minister L K Advani and other witnesses would be decided after July 20.

Continuing his submission before the commission, Cabinet Secretary Prabhat Kumar, who was the principal secretary (home) when the disputed structure was demolished on December 6, 1992, said though there was no specific intelligence report regarding threat to the structure, he had sought direction from the then chief minister for use of central para-military forces already available near Ayodhya.
