Court exempts Salman and Saif from personal appearance

A local court in Jodhpur exempted Bollywood actors Salman Khan and Saif Ali Khan from personally appearing for every hearing in a case pertaining to poaching of protected wild animals, filed against them by the Rajasthan forest department.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Raj Kamal Gaur, who had reserved his ruling on the applications filed by the two actors on June 17 seeking permanent leave from personal appearance on regular dates of hearings, accepted their plea on Monday.

The forest department had filed a complaint in the court on June 17 after a one-and-half year's investigation into the incident, which occurred in October 1998.

The complaint charged the two actors and three actresses - Sonali Bendre, Tabu and Neelam - of hunting black bucks and chinkaras near Kankani, Luni and Gudha villages in Jodhpur district in October 1998, violating provisions of the Wildlife Act. The forest department filed 116 documents along with the complaint and cited 51 witnesses to substantiate its charges.

Apart from this case, the police had filed two chargesheets in court last year against Salman Khan and others in poaching cases. Another case against Salman under the Arms Act is still under investigation.
