Rebel leader among 13 killed in Lanka

E-Mail this report to a friend

Thirteen Tamil Liberation Tigers, including their leader, were killed when security forces attacked a bunker in Omanthai, while 14 Sea Tigers were killed when the Sri Lankan navy destroyed a flotilla near Vattilakerni in Jaffna peninsula.

A government statement said an army fighting patrol spotted a bunker occupied by terrorists, two km north of defences near Omanthai at 3 pm Tuesday. The troops having moved close to the bunker took the rebels by surprise and attacked them with rocket-propelled grenades, killing 13. Among them was rebels leader Kurunja Akka.

Troops also recovered several T-56 assault rifles and other equipment from the bunker.

Fourteen Sea Tigers were killed Monday when the navy's Dvora fast attack craft confronted a flotilla of enemy boats. Two naval craft sank and at least 15 sailors were killed. Seventeen sailors were also reported missing.
