MEA rejects Karunanidhi's solution to Lankan crisisThe Ministry of External Affairs on Monday rejected the idea of an 'eelam state' in Sri Lanka and said it favoured a solution to the island nation's ethnic problem within the framework of its unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty. Commenting on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Karunanidhi's statement that an independent eelam was the only solution to Sri Lanka's problems, an MEA spokesman said: "Our stand remains unchanged." The Indian Government has time and again stated that the ethnic problems (in any country) should be resolved taking into consideration aspirations of all groups involved. Asked whether the Sri Lankan Government has conveyed its protest to India over Karunanidhi's remarks, the spokesman replied in negative. However, he said: "We are in constant touch with the Sri Lankan Government.'' Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Monday denounced Karunanidhi for advocating division of Sri Lanka. The CPM politburo in a statement said his (Karunanidhi's) statement was not in tune with the National Democratic Alliance government's policy. UNI
