Talvadi police station locked by angry protestors
Ramanand S in Gajanur
A mob of about a thousand people barged into the Talavadi police station, under whose jurisdiction Gajanur village falls, alleging that they failed to provide enough security to Dr Rajakumar, who was kidnapped by sandalwood smuggler Veerappan yesterday.
Gajanur is situated just one kilometer from the Talavadi police station. Local Kannada-speaking people became furious when the police did not turn up at the abduction site till 11 am today.
They took out a procession to the police station and entered it. They demanded that constables be posted at the farmhouse where Dr Rajakumar was kidnapped. The station sub-inspector did post a few constables later. Even the additional superintendent of police of Periyar district rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the protestors. But they did not heed his words and finally locked up the police station after forcing all the policemen out.
Talavadi observed a total bandh today. Gajanur, a sleepy village, was tense and swarming with media persons and police personnel. Periyar District Superintendent of Police Thavarakanan is personally supervising security arrangements.
