Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Pramod Mahajan Monday assured the Lok Sabha that his government would extend every possible help to secure the safe release of Kannada film star Dr Rajakumar.

Dr Rajakumar was kidnapped from his farmhouse on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border by dreaded forest brigand, Veerappan, on Sunday night.

Mahajan said Union Minister of Tourism and Culture Ananth Kumar has rushed to Chennai to discuss the matter with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and his Karnataka counterpart S M Krishna.

He said the goverment shared "the anguish and anxiety of the members" over the incident.

In the Upper House, External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh said the Union Home Ministry was in constant touch with the Karnataka government.

Several Rajya Sabha members alleged that incidents of crime in Tamil Nadu were on the rise and state had failed to tackle the situation.
