New phone tariff by August 31: TRAI

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said Monday that a new telephone tariff would be announced by August 31.

The revised tariff was to have been announced by Monday, but it is being put off because of delay in receipt of data for undertaking a review, the TRAI said in a statement in New Delhi.

The new regulatory body, after assuming office in March, had decided to postpone the review by four months through an order and the new tariff was to be finalised by July 31.

The previous regulator at the time of finalising the telephone tariff order, 1999 had decided to review the tariff after a year. As per the TTO 1999, the reviewed tariff was to be implemented from April 1, 2000, but was postponed to July 31 by the new authority.

The previous regulator had decided to implement tariff rebalancing in three phases as the increase in rentals and the reduction of STD/ISD call charges required for rebalancing were found to be too sharp for one-time implementation.

The first phase was implemented on April 1 last year and the second phase was to begin from April 1 this year.
