Leptospirosis now strikes in Gujarat

E-Mail this report to a friend

Leptospirosis has claimed six lives in south Gujarat, with two deaths reported over two days, official sources said in Surat Monday.

One of the two deaths was from Surat district.

Fiftyfour suspected cases of leptospirosis, mainly affecting tribals working in farms in the region during the monsoon, have been registered in hospitals.

Eighteen of them were undergoing treatment at the New Civil Hospital.

In Bombay, 28 persons have died due to leptospirosis in the metropolis and adjoining Thane district, even as the Maharashtra Government geared up to take effective steps to control the disease.

According to doctors, bacterial germs, found in the urine of rodents, infect an abrasion on the legs, leading to high fever and acute body pain.

Making a statement about the deaths in the legislative council Monday, Public Health Minister Digvijay Khanvilkar said the government was leaving no stone unturned in controlling the disease.
