Rifat Jawaid in Calcutta

As many as seven dacoits were killed by an armed mob in Milanpur Bazar area of the South 24-Parganas district in West Bengal, early on Sunday morning.

Though senior police officials failed to confirm the toll, Prasun Mukherjee, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), told rediff.com that "there was some violence in South 24-Parganas."

He, however, added that reports from district officials were awaited.

District Superintendent of Police, South 24-Parganas, A K Maliwal, said his officers had rushed to the disturbed area.

Of late, lynching cases have assumed alarming proportions in South 24-Parganas district. In the first week of July alone, about 15 people were killed on the suspicion of being dacoits.
