WB assembly witnesses uproarious scenes over massacre of Trinamul activists

Amidst pandemonium, the opposition Congress, Trinamul Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party unitedly staged a walkout from the West Bengal assembly on Friday protesting the massacre of eleven people in Birbhum district on Thursday.

The opposition had demanded that Deputy Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee give a statement in the House on Thursday's incident in which eleven people, reported to be Trinamul Congress supporters, were killed allegedly by Communist Party of India-Marxist activists near Nanur in Birbhum district. However, Bhattacharjee did not oblige.

Barring the SUCI and Gorkha National Liberation Front members, the entire opposition stalled the proceedings of the House from the very beginning waving black flags, shouting slogans demanding a discussion on the incident and resignation of the Left Front government.

In the melee, Tapas Roy of the Congress took the Speaker's mace, hit a table and ran with it towards the doors. He was, however, prevented from leaving by the Watch and Ward staff of the House. One MLA tore papers pertaining to the business proceedings while others climbed on the reporters' table and shouted slogans.

Later, talking to newspersons, Leader of the Opposition Atish Chandra Sinha alleged that there was no democracy in the state and the violence 'triggered by the CPI-M against the opposition' was spreading to every district'.

Trinamul Congress leader Pankaj Banerjee alleged that the government had lost the right to continue in power, following the series of political violence and murders in the state.

A delegation of opposition members later went to the Raj Bhavan to apprise the governor about the state's law and order situation.
