British national arrested in Goa child abuse case

Interpol has arrested a British national at the instance of the Central Bureau of Investigation in London, who was accused by the agency in the infamous Goa child abuse case.

A CBI spokesman said Thursday that the accused Raymond Andrew Varley had been arrested by the Interpol following a "Red Corner" notice last year.

The spokesman said the agency would soon send all legal documents to secure his extradition to India.

He would be the second person to be extradited in this case after E C Mcbride, a New Zealander.

The sensational case involved sexual abuse of children in an orphanage in Goa.

This case came into light in 1995 after the caretaker of the orphanage tried to lure a local boy. The Goa police then raided the house and sezied photographs of children being sexually exploited.

The police chargesheeted the caretaker and three men staying in the orphanage.

The case was later transferred to the CBI after instructions from Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court, to probe role of various in the racket.

The caretaker Freddy Peat has been convicted by the trial court while the trial for six other foreigners including Varley is continuing, the spokesman added.
