E-Mail this report to a friend

Syed Firdaus Ashraf in Bhoiwada Court, Bombay

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate B P Kamble of the Bhoiwada metropolitan magistrate court on Tuesday dismissed the Maharashtra government's case against Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, saying it was "time-barred".

The court proceedings lasted just 45 minutes. Defence counsel Adhik Shirodkar, MP, appearing for Thackeray, argued that there was no case against his client, since the offence he was being charged with were seven years old.

Shirodkar said he would move a bail application if the court found his client guilty of the offence he was being charged with. He also referred to the widespread tension in Bombay because of the case, and the hardships that the poor could be subject to if Thackeray was convicted.

Hordes of Shiv Sena rank and file, who filled the court premises since Tuesday morning, burst into joy at the news.
