E-Mail this report to a friend

The Maharashtra legislative assembly today witnessed uproarious scenes in the house when Opposition members, mainly Shiv Sena and BJP members, damaged the speaker's table, broke chairs, uprooted mikes, threw papers in the house in protest against the 'arrest' of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray.

Before commencement of the day's proceedings at noon, the Opposition members started shouting anti-government slogans and hurled abuses at Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, also the home minister, who was not present in the house at that time.

The BJP's Raj Purohit picked up the silver mace from the speaker's table while Sena members Sanjay Band, Gulabrao Patil, Bala Nandgaonkar and others broke the chairs and threw some papers in the air.

They uprooted the speaker's table and removed the cushion from his chair. Some of the members were seen breaking chairs on the podium.

However, the speaker went ahead with the business of announcing question hour, which could not be heard in the din and on seeing the situation going out of control, adjourned the house.
