Thackeray case: Bombay police receives prosecution order

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Bombay police on Sunday received the Maharashtra government's order permitting the prosecution of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray for his allegedly inflammatory articles in Sena daily, Saamna, during the December 1992-January 1993 communal riots.

Police Commissioner M N Singh said he had received the order to prosecute Thackeray, adding the next step would be to file a chargesheet in court.

Asked if and when Thackeray would be arrested, he said, "there is no time-frame, but the legal process will be completed by next week."

Paramilitary forces, drawn from neighbouring states, have been deployed in Bombay and other parts of Maharashtra in view of Thackeray's likely arrest.

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal on Saturday said they would go ahead with Thackeray's arrest despite the Centre's refusal to provide 27 companies of the Central Reserve Police Force as requested by the state government.
