Plea to prevent Thackeray's arrest dismissed

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Bombay High Court Friday dismissed a public interest litigation seeking an order to restrain the Maharashtra Government from arresting Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray and Samajwadi Party city unit president Abu Asim Azmi.

The petitioner, 77-year-old D N Uplekar, a resident of Dadar in north Mumbai, had said Thackeray's arrest would trigger large-scale violence in the state.

The Maharashtra Government has cleared Thackeray's prosecution in a 1992-93 riots case, wherein he has been accused of writing inflammatory editorials in party newspaper Saamna at the height of communal tension in Bombay.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice B P Singh and Justice N J Pandya ruled that it was not a fit case for filing a PIL.
